The Cleaner has posted several typically impressive results this season, however trained Mick Burles has revealed the leading Tasmanian will sport a headgear change when lining up for Saturday’s Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.
Announcing himself to the nation over an impressive spring preparation, The Cleaner finished second in the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m); progressing to success in both the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) and ending his Melbourne tenure an impressive third in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Having returned for a close second to Admiral in the Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) first-up before finishing a credible fourth in the featured Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), Burles told Racing Ahead he is pleased with the condition of the son of Savoire Vivre but believes the change of gear from blinkers to a visor could mean the difference in a return to the winner’s circle on Saturday.
“It was a good run second-up over 2000m, I was pretty happy with it,” Burles said.
“He pulled up brilliant, so I was real pleased with him.
“He’s just had a couple of little gallops since. He had one last Friday and one again this morning, so he’s really on song. I’m really happy with him.
“I’ve taken the blinkers off and put the visors on so he can see them coming.
“Entirely Platinum got half a length in front of him (in the Australian Cup) and as soon as he saw him he went again and got back in front of him.
“Craig Newitt advised me to do it about 10 starts ago, but me being a pig-head I didn’t change them. But I’ve gone along with him now.”
Posting an impressive total of 18 career wins and a further 14 minor place finishes from a total of 48 starts, The Cleaner was nominated amongst a group of 19 for the 2015 Easter Cup, and is expected to figure in a capacity field of 16 following the race’s barrier draw on Wednesday.
