Twelve runners remain in contention for Saturday’s 2016 Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Awesome Rock remains outright favourite in 2016 Easter Cup betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Darren Weir-trained stable mates Lidari ($5) and Puccini ($7).
Will Awesome Rock justify his clear favouritism and win the 2016 Easter Cup, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?
Puccini has already posted a number of commendable results for Weir since transferring to his care in spring and represents terrific value at current Easter Cup odds. A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of the New Zealand Derby (2400m), the Encosta De Lago entire immediately responded upon arriving at Weir’s stables; running a close second in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown on November 14th. Having placed third in the Group 3 TAB Rewards Stakes (1400m) on March 5th, Puccini was completely luckless in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) last time and will relish a step-up to 2000m on Saturday.
Extra Zero ($8)
Extra Zero is a proven performer at the class and relishes 2000m racing, and is worth consideration for a bet at current 2016 Easter Cup odds of $8 for success or $2.65 to finish in the first three. Running an agonizingly-close second to stable mate Spillway in last year’s edition of the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), the Danzero gelding posted a number of typically impressive results through spring highlighted by a strong run for fifth in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m). Having finished third in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) and sixth in the Australian Cup most recently, Extra Zero’s class and experience is sure to count for a lot in the 2016 Easter Cup.
Awesome Rock ($3.10)
Awesome Rock was first past the post in the Australian Cup a fortnight ago but was unlucky to lose the maiden Group 1 triumph in a protest. Posting a commendable career total of two wins and seven minors through eighteen competitive starts so far, the Fastnet Rock entire ended a strong 2015 campaign with success in the Listed Symphony Stakes (1800m) on Melbourne Cup Day, but clearly needed the run when resuming this time for twelfth in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m). Having run on for fourth in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) in his only other start prior to the Australian Cup, Awesome Rock will likely require luck in running in the Easter Cup after drawing barrier 11.
