OTI Racing’s Tom Melbourne is currently considered the $4.20 favourite in 2017 Easter Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of War Legend ($8) and Dark Eyes ($9.50).

Will Tom Melbourne justify favouritism and win the 2017 Easter Cup, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

Goldstream ($10)

Goldstream has produced a number of outstanding results across all corners of the globe and should relish the conditions of the Easter Cup. Winner of the Group 2 Italian Derby (2213m) in his first season in 2015, the Martino Alonso gelding won the Bitalli Handicap (2000m) in late January this year; progressing to second in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) by failing to handle the heavy going in the Listed Albury Gold Cup (2000m) last time out. Goldstream should be able to find a good position close to the pace from his central draw and will be partnered by in-form hoop Ben Allen in the 2017 Easter Cup.

Grey Lion ($12)

Grey Lion will make his first appearance of 2017 in the Easter Cup and represents terrific value to win the race at a current $12 quote, or $3.50 to finish in the first three. Debuting to Australian racing for a smart second behind Qewy in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) in October, the Galileo entire was last seen tailing off to finish fourteenth in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m). While arguably not getting the trip on that occasion, the 2000m of Saturday’s Easter Cup should be right in Grey Lion’s wheelhouse, particularly first-up and he will be partnered by Craig Newitt.

Purple Smile ($71)

Purple Smile is a black type winner amongst company stronger than he will face in the Easter Cup and he is undoubtedly over the odds at $71 to win, or $18.50 to finish in the first three this weekend. Capping a smart autumn campaign with an impressive win in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) in 2016, the Zabeel gelding is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from his first-up run for seventh in the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) on March 13th. Purple Smile will carry only 54.5kgs and will jump from a central draw.
